Learn about Body Mass Index (BMI), how to calculate it, and interpret results to understand your ideal weight and physical health.
What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a medical measurement used to assess whether a person's weight is appropriate for their height. It's calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters.
BMI Formula
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ (Height in meters)²
Example: A person weighing 70 kg and 1.75m tall: BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75)² = 22.9
BMI Results Interpretation
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 - 24.9: Normal weight
- 25 - 29.9: Overweight
- 30 or above: Obese
Is BMI Always Accurate?
While BMI is widely used, it doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle. Athletes may show high BMI despite excellent health. Use it as an initial indicator, not a final diagnosis.
